For a Korean-inspired eyeliner look, choose the effect before choosing the pen. Brown or black controls the contrast you want to see; pencil or liquid changes how you build the line. These are separate decisions. A brown liquid liner can look crisp, while a black pencil can be blended into a softer edge.

Start with one small change to your current makeup rather than buying a complete new routine. The event portraits in this guide are references for styling and placement, not evidence of the eyeliner worn.

1. Choose contrast before colour names

Decide whether you want the liner to be the first thing you notice. For a softer-looking outline, begin by comparing brown shades. For a stronger graphic edge, include black in the comparison. Maybelline's brown-eyeliner guide describes brown as a subtler option alongside the intensity of black. That is a useful starting point, not a rule about which colour every person should wear.

Look at the result with your eyes open and the rest of your makeup in place. A favourite colour in a close-up may feel different when you see your whole face. Your preferred result matters more than matching a category label.

Your priority Start by comparing Check before buying
A quiet lash-line outline Brown pencil and brown liquid Actual depth and edge softness
A distinct, fine wing Liquid liners with different tips Tip shape and the line you can control
A softly blended edge Pencil formulas Whether the instructions allow blending before setting
A strong graphic finish Black options in both formats Opacity, finish and your preferred width

2. Compare the tool as well as the formula

Two Korean-brand examples show why the format deserves its own decision. CLIO Sharp So Simple Pencil Liner is presented with a slim 2 mm tip and several black and brown choices. The brand's application direction is to glide it along the lash line. A narrow pencil may appeal when you want to work in small sections, but its exact finish still depends on the formula and how you apply it.

ETUDE Drawing Show Brush Eyeliner is a brush-pen example designed for a clean, defined line. Comparing it with a pencil is a way to identify the tool you prefer, not a claim that one format is better for every eye shape. Read the current product instructions and shade information on the exact item.

3. Compare brown shades on the same terms

Brown is a family of colours. A deep brown, a warmer brown and a muted brown may create different effects beside your lashes and eyeshadow. Begin with the depth you need, then consider whether you like the warmth. Avoid choosing only from the colour of the cap or the shade name.

When swatches are available, compare a single thin stroke and a slightly built-up stroke. Keep the lighting and viewing distance consistent. If you normally wear a fine line, a large opaque swatch does not answer the whole question. If comparing online, look for the actual shade identifier and finish description rather than treating differently lit photos as a controlled test.

Black also has variations. Check whether the listing describes a matte, satin or other finish. Decide whether you want the line to sit quietly beside the lashes or become a visible feature of the look.

4. Design a smaller line first

Choose three things before you start: where the line begins, how thick it should be and where it should end. Keep the first attempt short enough that you can assess its shape without having to correct a large wing. Add length or width only after checking both eyes with a relaxed expression.

Work with your own crease and the amount of lid visible when your eyes are open. A line copied from a different face does not automatically keep the same proportions on yours. Compare the overall balance instead of trying to make two isolated close-ups identical.

5. Practise the sequence you will actually use

Maybelline's application tutorial advises beginners to allow for corrections and suggests applying liner before other eye makeup when learning. Use that idea for a practice session: leave time to adjust the outer edge rather than testing a new product immediately before leaving.

Follow the formula's directions for application and setting. Do not assume every pencil can be blended for the same period or every liquid dries at the same speed. Apply only where the product is intended to be used. Keep a suitable makeup remover available, and follow its instructions when correcting or removing the line.

6. Make one purchase solve one problem

If you already like your black pencil but want a quieter result, compare colour before replacing the format. If you like brown but struggle with the edge, compare the tool before buying several more brown shades. Write down what the new product needs to change.

Check the shade code, quantity, application directions and removal instructions before ordering. International listings can differ, and an old recommendation does not establish the current selection or availability.

Frequently asked questions

Is brown always more natural-looking than black?

No single shade guarantees that result. Depth, opacity, line width and the rest of your makeup all affect how prominent it looks. Compare the actual finish you intend to wear.

Is pencil always easier than liquid?

It depends on the task and the tool. Compare how comfortably you can make your preferred line. A product that makes a wide blended edge convenient may not be your favourite for a fine, crisp wing.

Do I need a Korean brand for a Korean-inspired look?

You can explore the placement and finish with products you already own. Korean-brand examples help you compare available tools; they are not a requirement for trying a style.
