Keep your receipt, payment method and unopened packaging until you are sure about a cosmetics purchase in Korea. If you may need an exchange or refund, ask the purchasing store about its process before you leave the area. A trip itinerary can make a shop's stated return period less useful than it first appears.
This guide explains how to prepare a store enquiry, using Olive Young Myeongdong Global's published FAQ as a specific example. Other retailers and online orders need their own policies. For choosing the type of shop in the first place, see our Korean cosmetics store guide.

First identify the purchase channel
Write down where the transaction happened: the physical store and branch, a Korean online shop, a global online shop, or an airport duty-free retailer. A brand name on the shopping bag does not identify the seller or the return process by itself.
Use the receipt or order confirmation to find the correct business and contact route. If you bought several items at different branches, keep each receipt with its own purchase list. A photo can help you organise the information, but retain the original documents and ask the seller what it requires.
What the official Olive Young store FAQ says
The Olive Young Myeongdong Global FAQ says exchanges and refunds apply to unopened, saleable goods within 15 days of purchase, with the payment method and purchase receipt brought to the store. It states that refunds are available at the original purchasing store; exchanges at other Olive Young stores are described for items of equal or greater value. It also says gift exchanges require an exchange card.
Use that as a prompt to confirm the terms for your actual transaction. The FAQ is a retailer's stated process, not a summary of every consumer's legal rights or a guarantee that an individual request will be accepted. It does not establish how an opened, damaged or defective product will be handled in every circumstance.
A receipt checklist that helps you explain the request
| Keep or note | Why it helps |
| Store and branch | Identifies the business you need to revisit or contact. |
| Date and receipt | Lets staff locate the transaction and explain the applicable timing. |
| Payment method | Lets you ask what is needed for the original payment to be handled. |
| Full product name, size and shade | Distinguishes the actual item from a similar version. |
| Packaging and supplied components | Lets staff inspect what was sold and what you still have. |
If there is a problem with the item, make a clear note of what you observed and when. Keep useful photographs of the package or issue. Ask staff for the appropriate next step without assuming that a general unopened-goods policy answers a defect enquiry.

Ask before opening a purchase you are unsure about
Opening the box just to check the shade may change the item's condition. Before breaking a seal, confirm the product code on the outside and ask the shop what can be checked without opening it. For a gift, keep the recipient's preference or requested shade in your notes so that you can compare it at checkout.
For a promotion or set, ask whether the whole set, accompanying extras or any gift documents would need to be returned together. Do not discard components while waiting for an answer. If a purchase involved a tourist tax-refund process, tell the store and ask what documents it needs; a product return and a tax refund are different enquiries.
Fit the enquiry into the time you have left
Check your departure date and whether you can return to the purchasing branch. A stated period after purchase does not mean there will be a convenient branch at your next destination, or that you can complete the process after leaving Korea. Contact the seller promptly if travel makes a visit difficult, and ask what options are actually available.
For help explaining a tourism-related problem, the Korea Tourism Organization's 1330 Travel Helpline and Complaint Center offers travel information, interpretation and tourist-complaint channels. Its official page lists 1330 within Korea and +82-2-1330 from overseas, along with online options. Assistance does not predetermine the outcome of a retailer enquiry.
Before your next purchase, return to our first-trip shopping checklist and add one question to your own list: “What would I need to keep if this item is not right?”
