THE BEAUTYITEM DETAIL EDIT / PRIMER

Makeup primer earns its place when you can name the part of your base you want to adjust: the application feel, a chosen finish or a particular area. For a simple Korean-inspired routine, start with the directions for your skincare and foundation, then see where the selected primer fits between them. You can keep the rest of the routine familiar while testing that one change.

The portraits are styling references. The examples below explain different product instructions; they do not identify a celebrity's primer or promise the same result on every face.

Make the goal specific

Look at the base you normally wear in your everyday light. Decide what you would like to change and where. You might want a different-looking finish through the centre of the face while keeping more reflection on the cheeks. You might simply prefer a different feel when applying foundation.

Write down one goal before comparing bottles. This keeps the choice focused: an all-over layer, a small targeted area and a finishing touch are different applications. Check whether the product you are considering is intended for the one you want.

Find its place in the sequence

MAC's Studio Fix Mattifine primer directions place it on the cleansed face after moisturiser and before foundation. They allow fingertips, a sponge or a brush. This is a clear example of a primer used as a preparation step within a base routine.

For that kind of application, follow your skincare directions first, then use the primer as instructed before adding foundation. Keep the amount restrained enough that you can assess what the layer is doing. More product is a separate decision, not an automatic next step.

Use the tool the formula supports and that you can control. The listed options for one primer do not establish the best tool for every other product.

Stage to check What to read
Before the primer Your skincare instructions and the primer's stated starting point
During application Amount, movement and intended areas
Before foundation Any product-specific instruction to let the layer settle
After the base Whether the formula explicitly allows use over makeup

Match the movement to the formula

e.l.f.'s Power Grip Primer page tells users to pat the primer into the skin with fingertips. That gives a different application cue from treating every primer as a cream to spread repeatedly with a brush.

Read the exact version you own, then try its intended movement with a small amount. Let that instruction guide the first attempt instead of combining several unrelated techniques from different products.

Check the current label for any pause before the next makeup step. There is no single waiting time in this guide: use the timing your chosen formula specifies. If the directions change between regional listings or product versions, prioritise the item you actually received.

A finishing option can be product-specific

Charlotte Tilbury's Wonderglow instructions begin after moisturiser and use fingers, focusing on the tops of the cheekbones. The page also gives an option to apply that product over foundation. It shows why the word primer alone does not tell you every permitted use.

If you want a finishing accent, check for that instruction rather than assuming any primer can be tapped over a completed base. Try the selected product in a small area and assess how it looks beside the rest of the makeup.

Keep the goal simple. A directed accent and an all-over preparation layer have different jobs, even when one product offers both options. Choose the job before deciding how widely to apply it.

Test one combination fairly

When trying a primer with a foundation you already know, keep the rest of your routine and the amount of foundation similar. Otherwise, a new tool, a heavier base and a different finishing product make it difficult to judge the primer's role.

Check the result at normal mirror distance, then look more closely at the area you wanted to adjust. Compare it in the light where you will actually wear it. A close event portrait can suggest a finish, but it cannot supply a controlled product comparison.

If you dislike the combination, review the amount, movement and sequence before deciding you need another bottle. Avoid turning a single imperfect application into a rule about every primer or every foundation with a similar ingredient label.

Three useful answers

Do I need primer for Korean makeup?

Choose it when it adds a step you want to your routine. A Korean-inspired finish can be explored with the base products you already enjoy; there is no compulsory primer category.

Should primer go over moisturiser?

That is the sequence in the MAC and Wonderglow examples. Follow the selected primer and skincare directions for your own combination, including any instructions before makeup.

Can I put primer over foundation?

Only use that approach when the formula supports it. Wonderglow gives a specific example; the option does not transfer automatically to every product called a primer.

Check the exact item

Our Korean beauty tools guide helps compare applicators. If you are matching packaging from a Korean shop, our guide to product names, shades and refills explains what to record. Save the full primer name and version alongside the foundation you plan to use.
